Match Report (Courtesy of reporter Bob Hancox)

The 1st team were looking to build on the back of last weeks first away points of the season at Medbourne. Milton had not won this season, having just 3 draws to their name, but they would provide a stronger challenge. A couple of changes due to injury were made with young Jack Messinger replacing Henry Spears in goal – he had injured his hand at work and Matt Barron returning in place of Ryan Ansell who picked up a knock from last week. Paul Currier returned to the bench following his recent suspension.

On a lovely playing surface Milton started the stronger and with a 3 man attack took the game to Heyford forcing a few corners whose delivery especially from their right caused problems in the Heyford box. From one of these Jack Messinger held on to a close range shot right on the goal line to keep the score blank. Heyford were struggling to get their passing game together which meant they wern’t putting the Milton back line under pressure apart from a couple of half breaks. Milton continued to play long balls up front from which their mid field was picking up a lot of second balls making them look likely to score first.

However with just over 20 minutes gone Heyford took the lead with possibly their first effort on target. Whitty picked the ball up in the Milton half and as he jinked his way towards the box was fouled just outside in a central area. From the free kick Matt Barron left the Milton keeper rooted as he clipped the ball in to the roof of the net. The goal gave Heyford mid field more confidence and they started to put the Milton defence under pressure using the space out wide better.

Half Time: Heyford Athletic 1 Milton 0

Heyford started the second half in the ascendancy with their passing and movement a lot better resulting in the Milton attack being limited to isolated breaks. Heyford thought they had got a second goal when Bruno picked up a through ball just outside the Milton box and despite appeals for off side he slipped the ball under the keeper and in to the net. With the goal given by the ref Milton players continue to claim off side and even though their linesman hadn’t flagged for off side the ref then decided to ask him was the player off side. Under pressure from the Milton player’s his reaction was to say yes and the ref disallowed it.

Heyford made a change shortly afterwards with Paul Currier coming on for Nik Maund going up front and Matt Barron moving to central mid field. Few chances were created by either side although the effort and commitment by all the players couldn’t be faulted. Bruno got him self booked when he re-acted to what looked like a stamp on his ankle by the Milton defender not for the first time either. Shortly afterwards Heyford made their second change with a straight swop with Luke Jones for Bruno. He almost immediately had a chance to hit the target when following a run in to the box by Paul Currier the ball rebounded to him off a Milton player. He appeared in 2 minds whether to shoot or lob the keeper but his effort was saved by the keeper.

Milton started to put Heyford under pressure as they looked for an equalizer with their 3 subs especially causing problems. It wasn’t long before they finally did score when their centre back picked the ball up on the half way line, easily broke past 2 poor Heyford challenges and as the defence backed off he drilled a low unstoppable shot from 30 yards in to the bottom corner of the goal. Milton now went in search of a winner and were unlucky not to get a penalty when one of their players appear to be pushed in the box and also had a effort from a corner cleared of the line.

With time running out a Heyford player was left writhing on the ground following what appeared another ankle stamping near the half way line – the ref later said he saw it but thought it ok – the ball was moved wide play and following a challenge between Jim Wayman and a Milton player they were both sent off for what looked like to me no more push and shove when a booking would have sufficed. Immediately play re started the final whistle went.

Full Time: Heyford Athletic 1 Milton 1

Match Summary:

Before the game this was an excellent chance to get 3 points and although we didn’t play brilliantly, from when we scored we looked a lot better. However the old saying that who ever gets the next goal would be important which was the case when we looked to have scored but it was disallowed. We then we sat back and allowed Milton to come on to us they scored and overall I thought they deserved a point. Following on from last weeks game the commitment and effort from the whole squad was again excellent and they should take that confident sign in to the next game.
