Report: (Courtesy of Nick Inwood)
Due
to a combination of a mounting injury list, work and a general
lack of commitment Heyford made just seven changes to the starting
XI this week, although one of those was the introduction of
debutante Richard Bott, who signed on the dotted line in mid
week (one of six new signings to arrive at the club this week).
Pegasus
arrived at Heyford on the back of some improved results of late
however their arrival only 15 minutes before the kick off may
have lead to Heyford players believing their opponents may not
have been that bothered about the result of the game.
That
theory was short lived as within 5 minutes of the kick off the
veteran Pegasus striker soared above Heyford goal keeper Neil
Byrne to power a header from a corner into the net via the cross
bar.
15
minutes later the same man doubled the Corby side's lead as
unmarked from the edge of the area he powered a volley high
past Byrne and into the net.
This
was difficult to take as up to this point Heyford had had the
majority of possession with Currey in particular causing the
Pegasus defence a number of problems including an excellent
header that crashed back off the cross bar.
The
game's key moment came minutes before the interval as Currey
went through one on one with the Pegasus keeper, who having
managed to make the initial block could do nothing as Currey,
laying on the floor with the net gaping, scooped the ball towards
the empty net only to watch on as it rebounded off the foot
of the post - surely a goal at this stage would have made the
second half a different game.
Within
a minute of this Pegasus and their veteran striker had scored
a third, as a good save from Byrne only saw the ball run across
the face of the goal for an easy tap in.
Half
Time: Heyford Athletic 0 Corby Pegasus 3
Having
seen us gift Harborough Town a two goal interval lead only 7
days prior, the management had stressed to the players before
kick off the need to keep the game tight so coming in facing
a three goal deficit was not part of the script.
With
pride to play for Heyford started the second period the better
side with Barron going close to pulling a goal back early on
before on 55 minutes Currey did pull a goal back with a low
shot from just inside the box.
Another
goal at this stage would have set up an interesting final 30
minutes although it wasn't to be despite Currey having another
excellent chance following a fine through ball from Morrisey.
With
Heyford chasing the game Pegasus nearly scored a fourth in the
closing minutes although an excellent save from Byrne followed
by a late strike crashing back off the bar kept the score line
at 3-1 despite an improved effort from the home side.

Summary:
No
disrespect to Pegasus, but this is a game that we should have
won and a game that we need to be winning if we are to remain
a Premier Division side next season.
I
am of the opinion that they were the worst team we have faced
this season (although I am sure that will be a different story
when we travel to West Glebe Park), so to be 3-0 down at half
time is nothing short of embarrassing and I think the silence
in the changing room at the interval showed that the players
were in agreement of this.
The
facts are that for whatever reason as a team we will continue
to struggle if we are continuously making 5,6,7 changes to the
starting XI every week.
On
paper we have arguably one of the strongest XI's in this league,
although if we can only get 4 or 5 of these players at a game
from one week to the next we will always be fighting a losing
battle.
This
weekend sees us travel to much fancied Brixworth, who we know
will be up their come the end of the season. Its now time to
roll our sleeves up, show some commitment and prove to not only
me and Smithy but also to yourselves that you are the good players
that we know you are and more importantly that you want to play
for Heyford Athletic at this level.
On
a brighter note I thought today's referee was by far the best
we have had this season, he didn't give too much although maybe
that was why he was better than his predecessors as he allowed
the game to flow - also credit to Pegasus who belied their reputation
of being a dirty side.
Man of the Match: Matt Currey
Despite
missing a number of good opportunities Matt Currey was a constant
threat to the Pegasus rearguard and with a bit more luck could
easily have scored a hat-trick himself.
Has
improved week on week recently, and is firmly cementing himself
as a vital player in the team - hopefully his injury will clear
up in time to play at Brixworth on Saturday, as he would be
a big loss to the team.
Also
a mention to 'Botty' who showed some nice touches on debut giving
encouragement for the future.
