Report (Courtesy of Mark Smith)
Heyford
welcomed Corby Madisons, who we had recently played just two
games ago in the league for this Lower Junior Cup tie.
Much was expected and a first win of the season was hoped for
and once again the team looked strong on paper despite the late
withdrawals of Dom Stirling and Richard Marocco.
In the absence of Glenn Kilgour, Mark Whitehouse was handed
the captain's arm band and he stepped into the middle of the
back four that looked pretty solid. It was also good to welcome
Pete 'Ebby' Mullen back into the fold following a long lay off
through injury and he was thrown straight in, alongside Forrester
in the middle of the park. Genti was also back to bolster the
attack, with Dan Hawkins moving to wide right.
The
game started pretty evenly with half chances at either end.
Genti and Ian Grant were looking dangerous on the break, but
unfortunately I (Smudger) was having an off day (hands held
up there).
After
only about 10 minutes Madisons got the breakthrough when their
player manager, who had been sent off two weeks ago when we
met in the league, threaded a great ball through to their right
winger and he slipped the ball into the bottom corner past our
new "experienced" goalkeeper Dave Rogers, who it has
to be said had a good debut despite the score line suggesting
otherwise.
Heyford
should have been level before half time when Mullen slotted
a great ball through to me, although my lack of pace let me
down and the chance went begging.
We
were still very much in the game as the half time whistle blew
with the score line 1-0 to the visitors from Corby.

Heyford
started the 2nd half with a strong belief that the game was
there to be won but unfortunately the referee who had an absolute
shocker awarded Madisons a very dubious penalty in the first
minute of the half and our task was made twice as hard as the
penalty was struck home with ease to make the score 2-0.
Briscoe
had been adjudged to have pulled back the 'Beast' who had tormented
us at their place and even if he had committed a foul it was
outside the box and should have been a free kick. Briscoe had
done a good job containing the 'Beast' in the 1st half and we
were all shocked as were their players at this decision.
It's
easy to blame the ref and to be fair Madisons deserved to win
but referees as poor as this make it a very frustrating game
to play. He missed a blatant pass back and a clear penalty for
the home team was waved away.
Madisons
quickly scored two more goals and the game was done and dusted.
This
doesn't tell the whole story though because with the game probably
out of reach Heyford settled down with no pressure on their
shoulders and started to create a lot of chances. Their keeper
came quickly off his line to block 3 point blank shots when
we all thought we had scored and I missed a glorious one on
one opportunity. Genti finally got the goal that we deserved
with 15 minutes left on the clock. It was a messy goal but he
finished well for his 2nd goal in two starts this season.

Summary:
The
positives were the return of Mullen finding a new keeper and
playing with a little bit of confidence towards the end lets
hope we can carry the confidence forward because that's what
is lacking. We all need to be comfortable on the ball and trust
each other. I hope that first win is just around the corner
because the effort, commitment and team spirit is all there
in abundance. All three subs once again did very well, which
gives some of us who didn't play at our best some food for thought
which can only be a good thing for the club.
Man of the Match: Mark Whitehouse
Hard
working performance as usual from the skipper.
